Class Notes - Summer 2026
Pride of place in these Notes goes to Fred Harris for showing us what we can still accomplish – “I celebrated my 75th birthday with a 1000-mile bicycle trip in Japan for most of April. I started in Fukuoka and finished at a lakeside village near Mount Fuji. I wore my Williams cycling kit on the great journey. Japan is a wonderful country for biking with patient, careful drivers, many empty backroads, and legal riding on he sidewalk. I saw literally millions of cherry blossoms, ate countless delicious strawberries, and had many wonderful baths.”
My mention of my son’s wedding in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia reminded Jay Nawrocki of Dick Lammert’s daughter’s wedding. “The fancy folk at the St. Louis Country Club sitting poolside must have thought the bartender spiked their G&Ts when Dick’s about-to-be son-in-law appeared astride an elephant waving a curved sword. The parents of the couple walked alongside the elephant. Dick was wearing a sky blue, calf-length, Nehru jacket and golden slippers with up-turned, pointed toes. “
John Parker writes that Juli and he attend the high school graduation of their grandson Jackson in Bend, OR on June 6. He will attend TCU (instead of Williams). They had flown to NYC in early April to meet Joanne “Talbot” and Ben GInsberg, Mary Lou Boutwell and Georgie, Sue McFarland, and Sally Nourse to attend Bill Finn’s delightful “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” watch the Masters, and have dinner at the Yale Club. A wonderful weekend.
Tom Crain writes that “I am with Tom Scatcherd ’72 in Loon Lake, NY and still in touch with Richard Schneider. Daughter Vanessa is finishing her residency in emergency medicine after four years in med school in Poland and three years at Good Samaritan Hospital on Long Island.” Tom is still teaching two sections of Corporate Governance for Johns Hopkins’ Carey Business School – strange for someone with degrees in English and philosophy.
Jay Haug says “I am now fully retired after exiting the non-profit I founded 10 years ago. Continuing to write a daily devotional, combining addiction recovery and Christian ideas and practice, which should be ready in 2028. Our ninth grandchild was born in July. Like others, life is filled with family and travel these days. I have enjoyed reconnecting with Ed D’Arata, who lives 25 minutes away, over golf. Had the pleasure of playing with Mike Tate and Kevin Cummings at Ed’s course recently.”
Emlen Drayton’s daughter Maggie gave birth to a girl named Etta-Louise Honeybee Coyles in February.
And Scott Hopkins reports that he lost 100-year-old oak and maple trees in recent storms. In quieter times he has two generations of Baltimore Orioles slurping grape jelly, their favorite snack, outside his office window!
